About West Singhbhum

West Singhbhum is one of the districts of Jharkhand state, India. It came into being in 1990, when the old Singhbhum district was bifurcated. Chaibasa is the district headquarters.

The district is bounded on north by Khunti district, on the east by Saraikela Kharsawan district, on the south by Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundergarh districts of Orissa and on the west by Gumla district of Jharkhand and Sundargarh district of Orissa.

West Singhbhum district is full of dense forests and hills and harbors a variety of flora and fauna.

The district contains large deposits of iron ore which are increasingly being mined to feed the growing demand for this raw material primarily used in steel production.

Due to the lopsided development in this district wherein large quantities of mineral wealth are being mined with absolutely no benefit to the local population, the district is increasingly coming under the influence of the Naxalite movement.A rapidly deteriorating infrastructure in the form of broken or non-existent roads has added to the Naxalite's cause.

The district is a microcosm of what modern day development in India is all about:Benefits of development accumulating in the hands of private corporations and their employees to some extent with no trickle down effect for the common masses.

Chakradhrpur is a town of West Singhbhum. It is a small town with a population of 50,000 population. It is divisional headquarters of south eastern railway (from Kharagpur to Rourkela).
