The South Island is the larger of the two major
islands of New Zealand, but on it holds less than
25% of the New Zealand population. It has an area of
151,215 square km (58,093 square miles), making it
the world's 12th-largest island. Along its west
coast runs the mountain chain of the Southern Alps
with Mount Cook being the highest point, 3,754 m
(12,316 ft) above sea level.
The South Island is often called the Mainland
because it existed first according to Maori legend,
and is larger than the North Island. About a quarter
of New Zealand's inhabitants live on the South
Island. Some tourist say that the South Island is
one of the prettiest place in the world.
Some of the important cities of the South Island is
Christchurch and Dunedin. Queenstown and Wanaka are
one of the most favored tourist destinations.
