Rakino Island is a rugged, hilly island in the
Hauraki Gulf. It has a small resident population,
which expands over summer. Private beach houses
are available for rent (check the internet). The
island is connected to Auckland by a ferry service,
however it is not linked to Auckland’s electricity
supply - 240 volt solar energy keeps the community
functioning. Rakino had the world's first solar
powered public telephone. Sailors, fishermen and
divers enjoy the crystal clear waters around island.
Yachts and launches can find anchoring spots at
Pohutukawa, Woody and West Bays. The island is
mostly pasture with pockets of forest. Functional
facts: Approx. population 40, weekly ferry service,
one shop, limited accommodation.
